The Windows 11 Transition – Millions of Computers at Risk of Becoming Waste

News 30 October 2025 2 minutes reading

Microsoft’s transition to Windows 11 could lead to millions of fully functional computers being scrapped unnecessarily. That’s the warning from Inrego’s Communications Specialist, Isabell Millestu, in an interview with Aktuell Hållbarhet.

When older computers can no longer be upgraded, they’re often left unused—or sent straight to recycling—even though they still have plenty of life left in them. This contributes to the growing mountain of electronic waste, even as demand for refurbished IT is rapidly increasing.

“Electronics are now the fastest-growing waste stream in the world, and fully functional computers are at risk of becoming waste for no reason,” says Isabell Millestu.

In August, Inrego’s sales increased by over 30 percent compared to the same period last year—a result of many companies now replacing computers that are not compatible with Windows 11. Yet large amounts of valuable equipment remain idle on warehouse shelves and in desk drawers across the country.

Extending the lifespan of devices is the most effective way to reduce climate impact. As much as 95 percent of a computer’s total carbon footprint occurs during production, which means every reused device makes a significant difference.
