Why is the EU Election Important for the Circular Economy?

News 30 May 2024 2 minutes reading

The EU has a unique position to implement policies that can drive real change towards a more circular economy. Early voting for the EU elections is now underway, and you have the opportunity to make an impact.

A combination of sustainability and economics creates a circular economy, where companies replace raw materials with labor to promote a more sustainable future. At Inrego, nearly 200 of us work on extending the lifespan of electronics. We see daily how important it is to keep electronics in use for as long as possible. Yet, with a market still largely based on a linear economy where resources are produced for very short use and then discarded, it is clear that we still face significant challenges.

No matter how effective a national policy may be, it can never solve a global problem, as producers rarely tailor their production for a single country. However, when the EU legislates, producers pay attention. This is why the EU’s role is so crucial for the circular economy.

The EU has already taken several important steps to support circularity within the electronics sector. These include:

  • Common chargers for phones and soon for laptops

  • Longer software updates

  • Spare parts available for 7 years

  • Access to repair information

These initiatives show how the EU can drive the transition towards a more sustainable and circular economy. By voting in the EU elections, we all have the opportunity to influence the policies that shape our future and support initiatives that promote sustainability and circularity.

At Inrego, we will tirelessly continue working towards a sustainable future where products last longer and natural resources are used more efficiently. EU decisions and legislation play a critical role in enabling this transition. We hope you recognize the importance of this and vote!
