With high security requirements and a strong focus on sustainability, engineering consultancy WSP has been working with circular IT for several years. In partnership with Inrego, they’ve implemented efficient reuse solutions across 30 offices across Sweden. Their engagement demonstrate how climate efforts and smart IT management can go hand in hand at scale.
WSP is one of the world’s leading engineering and professional services firms, and sustainability is a key thread throughout the organization. The company recently launched a climate strategy where every employee is assigned individual climate goals, which has strengthened the focus on sustainability in every project. “It can involve anything from reducing the amount of concrete used in bridges to ensuring the responsible handling of used IT products in each department,” explains Benjamin Lundström, who works with IT at WSP.
WSP’s circular IT management in collaboration with Inrego has been in place for many years but saw a significant boost after the pandemic. “A lot has changed in our IT operations since then,” says Marcus Ekermo, Manager of Infrastructure Technology & Operations at WSP Nordics. He explains how internal structural changes combined with excellent service from Inrego made it easier to do the right thing. Today, thousands of IT products are reused every year from WSP’s 30 offices across the country.
“Sustainability is one of our core values and should permeate everything we do. Of course we want IT to contribute as well,” says Marcus. Benjamin adds: “We chose Inrego for several reasons. They offered us a compelling solution, and the portal is excellent, it provides us with the insights we need, is easy to use, and lets us generate the reports we require.”
Benjamin also highlights the collaboration’s efficiency and flexibility. “Being able to act quickly is really important for us, and our contact at Inrego is always ready to jump in, work some magic, and make things happen. I’m not sure every company has the capacity to do that,” he says.
WSP’s Top Tips for Successful Circular IT Management:
Centralize your IT model and lead the charge from the IT side
WSP transitioned from a decentralized IT setup to a more unified structure, with the IT department driving the process. Previously, when each office managed its own equipment, it was difficult to achieve a 1:1 return rate. “Now that IT owns the process, it’s as easy as pushing a button, and the secure locker is already on its way,” Marcus explains.Establish local accountability – with one person responsible per office
Whether in north or south of the country, WSP has someone on-site responsible for equipment, keeping the process running locally. It doesn’t always have to be an IT staff member. On smaller sites, an office manager often takes on the task. WSP also involves managers across locations and departments to help gather and transport equipment during site visits.Standardize equipment – it makes everything easier to track
To avoid unnecessary complexity, WSP has spent several years standardizing its office setups. This makes it easier to get a clear overview of the equipment in circulation and to identify what needs to be replaced.Make security an integral part of the process
Circular IT isn’t just about the environment, it’s a major security issue as well. “We have high security standards, so it’s important for us to partner with someone who uses Blancco data wiping,” says Benjamin. “It gives peace of mind – for us and our users.”
