Tariffs, threatened supply chains, and cybersecurity are on everyone’s minds. With Trump’s presidency, it’s no longer “business as usual.” Here’s how you can prepare for the impact on your IT supply chains.
Trump has taken office and is promising major changes - fast. Inrego met with Rebecca Gorringe, an advisor at Radar Group, to get a better understanding of the global IT supply chain landscape.
"There are many threats. Some key players will try to gain control over entire supply chains - from electricity supply to products. This will alter market conditions and trade agreements. It’s important to remember that whoever owns the resources also sets the terms," says Rebecca.
Disrupted Supply Chains and Rapidly Changing Trade Conditions
Global powers in transition affect supply chains and raise questions about where key components are produced. Trump’s aggressive tariffs on China and other nations risk disrupting global trade dynamics and the world economy. A single round of 10% tariffs could shave 0.7 percentage points off Europe’s GDP growth, according to recent IMF figures.
"This means that businesses operating in the global market may find themselves caught between the U.S. and China, facing supply chain disruptions and rapidly shifting business conditions. Many companies have already started preparing for this," Rebecca explains, citing Google as an example. Just weeks after the presidential election, Google accelerated its shift in production from China to Vietnam. The day after the election, discussions began about many Swedish companies potentially moving production to the U.S. due to Trump’s tariffs.
How to Prepare for Disrupted IT Supply Chains
We live in an unpredictable geopolitical landscape, both economically and politically. That’s why IT leaders must act strategically, turning threats into opportunities. Rebecca’s advice for IT decision-makers is:
Map your supply chains. Evaluate, adapt, and develop strategies for handling supply chain disruptions.
Create market diversification. Reduce reliance on U.S. and Chinese exports and imports by leveraging opportunities for expanded Scandinavian and European cooperation.
Implement agility in your business model. Maximize flexibility and prepare for a time of geopolitical and economic volatility.
