How Refurbished IT Can Help Beat Plastic Pollution

News 5 June 2025 3 minutes reading

Plastic pollution is one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time. On World Environment Day, June 5, individuals, companies, and organizations around the globe come together under a shared call to action: Beat Plastic Pollution.

World Environment Day is all about raising awareness of global environmental issues and encouraging meaningful action to protect our planet. The theme for 2025 is the responsible use of natural resources – with a particular focus on plastic waste. For us, it’s also the perfect opportunity to highlight a lesser-known source of plastic pollution: the plastic hidden in electronics.

The hidden plastic in electronics is hard to recycle

Did you know that plastics make up between 20–50% of the weight of most IT products? In laptops, it’s typically 30–40%, and in desktops and printers, it can reach up to 50%. These plastics are often complex blends or treated with flame retardants, making them difficult – or even impossible – to recycle. (European Commission, 2022)

At Inrego, we can reuse around 95% of all IT products that pass through our production process – giving them a second life instead of becoming waste. This saves both resources and emissions.

Beyond the environmental benefits of reuse, is also socially and economically sustainable. Refurbished products often end up in schools – both in Sweden and abroad – helping close the global digital divide. For companies looking to go even further, the monetary value of old equipment can be donated to charity.

E-waste: The fastest growing waste stream worldwide

Electronics don't just contain hard-to-recycle plastics. They also include critical and conflict-prone materials like gold, cobalt, lead, and mercury. By extending the lifespan of these products, we reduce the demand for new extraction – and help cut down on the corruption, child labor, and environmental damage associated with the electronics supply chain.

According to the UN’s Global E-waste Monitor, over 60 million tons of electronic waste were generated worldwide in 2023. Less than 20% of it was officially recycled – the rest ends up in landfills or incinerators, causing pollution, resource loss, and health hazards.
